How to Clean Your Dog’s Ears at Home

Routine ear cleaning is an important part of your dog’s hygiene and overall health. Whether your dog is prone to ear infections or just needs regular maintenance, keeping the ears clean can prevent discomfort and medical issues. Follow this easy guide to safely clean your dog’s ears at home.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

  • Veterinarian-approved ear cleaner (e.g., Epic Clean)
  • Soft gauze or cotton pads (do not use cotton swabs/Q-tips)
  • Ear medication, if prescribed

Step 2: Apply the Ear Cleaner

  1. Gently hold your dog’s ear upright.
  2. Squeeze the ear cleaner into the ear canal (usually 1–2 squirts, unless otherwise directed).
  3. Repeat for the other ear.

Step 3: Massage the Ear

After applying the cleaner, gently massage the base of the ear for about 20–30 seconds. You’ll often hear a squishing sound as the solution loosens debris and wax inside the canal. This step helps the cleaner reach deeper into the ear canal.

Step 4: Wipe the Ear Canal and Flap

  1. Use gauze or a cotton pad to wipe out the ear canal and the inside of the ear flap (called the pinna).
  2. Remove visible debris, wax, and excess cleaner—being careful not to push anything deeper into the ear.
  3. Repeat for the other ear.

Step 5: Administer Ear Medication (If Prescribed)

  1. Gently insert the tip of the medication applicator into your dog’s ear canal.
  2. Squeeze the applicator as you pull slightly upward, going about halfway up the canal.
  3. Gently massage the base of the ear to help distribute the medication evenly.
